Peterborough has the reputation of a modern, progressive city located within one of the UK's fastest growing regions. With growth comes the need to encourage development of new homes for ownership and rent, providing assistance with housing benefits, grants, improvement advice, and meeting the city's current and future housing needs.

In partnership with private business Peterborough ensures that gas appliances in tenanted properties are maintained in accordance with The Gas Safety (Installation and Use) Regulations 1998.

These Regulations apply to rented property and require that gas appliances and any gas installation pipework at the property be maintained so that it is safe and does not pose a risk of injury to any person. Each appliance must be checked for safety at least once every 12 months by a CORGI* registered contractor and a record kept of the dates of inspection, the defects identified and any repairs or replacement carried out.

The inspection itself is performed on a form (a CP12) which acts as a legal record of work completed, issues reported and action taken.

Interestingly Peterborough had already deployed mobile technology based on PDAs to its workforce to enable them to complete electronic CP12 forms. However, gaining a signature from the tenant was difficult and sometimes impossible using that technology. In addition, some of the engineers found the PDAs hard to use.

In a unique solution Ubisys, Peterborough City Council and Cognito have created a solution which still uses the PDAs to issue jobs out electronically, but also integrated the Digital Pen for capturing the data from the CP12. This offers the engineers the best of both worlds in a package they can use easily. The solution is also integrated to a back end application ensuring true end to end benefits.
